Most single-visit residential jobs in Columbia finish the same day. Larger residential abatements and commercial jobs run 2 to 5 days depending on containment size, SCDES notification timing, and site access. Testing-only visits are typically 45 to 90 minutes on site with lab results back in 3 to 5 business days (rush turnaround available).

Not worried, but not casual either. Pre-1980 Columbia-area homes commonly contain popcorn ceilings, 9x9 inch floor tile with black cutback mastic, transite (asbestos-cement) siding, pipe lagging, boiler insulation, and vermiculite (Zonolite) attic fill. Undisturbed, intact materials are generally safe. Sample and test before any renovation, demolition, or repair disturbs them.

Ranges vary widely with material, condition, containment size, and disposal distance. Yes. Vermiculite from the Libby, Montana mine may contain tremolite asbestos. Columbia-area homes with vermiculite attics dating to the 1950s-1990s should be treated as presumed-asbestos until lab-tested. Removal requires HEPA vacuum extraction under containment, air monitoring, and proper disposal at a permitted landfill.

South Carolina law does allow owner-occupants to handle asbestos in their own single-family residence in some circumstances, but disposal, transport, and disturbance rules still apply. In practice, DIY on friable material is a bad trade — one mistake can contaminate the whole house. We recommend a licensed abatement crew for anything beyond an intact sample-collection scenario. After abatement, an independent industrial hygienist (not the abatement crew) collects air samples inside the containment while aggressive air movers are running. Samples go to an accredited lab. Only after fibre counts fall below the SCDES clearance threshold can the containment come down. This is the certificate you want in the file when you sell the house.

Removal takes the material off site to a permitted landfill. Encapsulation seals the material in place with a purpose-built coating so fibres cannot become airborne. Encapsulation is faster and cheaper but leaves the asbestos in the building — appropriate for stable, hard-to-remove materials (like some pipe lagging or transite siding) when the owner accepts the future disclosure and long-term monitoring.

Yes. Rental units are outside the owner-occupant DIY exemption in South Carolina and require licensed abatement. We coordinate testing and abatement for landlords across Richland County and Lexington County regularly.
