How to recognise it before you climb up
Corrugated cement sheet on an outbuilding is the commonest form: grey, brittle, often with moss growth and a chalky surface where it has weathered. Asbestos-cement shingles on a house roof look like thick, rigid slates with a slightly fibrous edge where one has chipped. Both are a completely different material from modern fibre-cement, which looks similar and is not asbestos.
You cannot tell them apart from the ground and you should not be breaking a piece off to look. A sample settles it, and on an outbuilding roof that is usually a single sample.
Why roofing is handled differently from siding
Weathered roof sheet is more fragile than wall cladding, and it is above you. Old cement sheet does not take weight — people fall through these roofs, which is a far more immediate danger than the fibre. So the work runs off crawl boards or from below with the sheets lifted whole, never walked on and never dropped.
Power-washing a cement-asbestos roof is the single worst thing that can be done to one: it strips the weathered surface straight into the air and the runoff. If a pressure-washing contractor has offered to clean your roof and the building is pre-1980, get it identified first.
