This is the single most common version of the question and the answer is the least ambiguous. Spray-on ceiling texture was asbestos-bound as standard until the late 1970s, and stock kept being used into the early 1980s, so a pre-1985 ceiling is suspect until tested.

Before a renovation, a floor lift or a demolition

Floor lift: test the tile and the black adhesive under it as two separate materials. The mastic frequently reads higher than the tile and it is the one people forget.
