Do these four things before you call anyone

1. Stop the work. Every further minute of cutting, scraping or sweeping adds to what has to be cleaned up.
2. Shut the room. Close the door, and turn off any fan or HVAC moving air through that space — a running return spreads it through the whole house.
3. Leave the debris exactly where it is. Do not sweep it, do not bag it, and above all do not run a domestic vacuum over it. Standard filters pass asbestos fibre straight through and exhaust it at head height.
4. Keep people and pets out until somebody has looked at it.

Those four things cost nothing and they are the difference between a contained problem and a distributed one.

Is this actually an emergency? The honest answer

Sometimes it is not, and we will say so. Intact material that somebody drilled one hole through is a much smaller event than a ceiling that has been dry-scraped across a whole room. What decides it is whether the material was friable, how much got disturbed, and whether air has been moving through the space since.

The genuinely urgent cases are perished pipe lagging that has come down, disturbed attic fill, and any dry scraping or grinding in an occupied house. Those should be dealt with rather than monitored. A single drill hole in sound transite siding is not in that category, and you should not be charged as though it is.

What a cleanup involves, and why it is not the same as a planned job

A planned abatement removes a known material under containment built in advance. A cleanup deals with material that is already spread — settled on floors, in carpet, on surfaces, potentially in the ductwork. The work is HEPA vacuuming and wet wiping rather than scraping, and it usually needs clearance air sampling afterwards to prove the space is habitable again.

We sample first wherever there is time, because a negative result ends it immediately and a positive result tells us how far to take the cleanup. If the material is obviously friable and the house is occupied, containment goes up while the lab runs.

Renovation stopped because something turned up?

This is the commonest version of the call: the kitchen is half out, a contractor has found black adhesive under the tiles or grey wrap on a pipe, and everyone has downed tools. That is a recoverable position and the trades do not have to sit idle for a week. Rush laboratory turnaround exists for exactly this, and a negative result gets everyone back on site the same week.
