Found Asbestos During a Renovation in Columbia? What to Do First
Work has stopped, the trades are standing around and somebody has found something gray. This is recoverable and it does not have to cost a week. Here is the order to do things in.
Stop, and do not clean it up
The instinct is to sweep it, bag it and get rid of it. That is the move that does the damage. A domestic vacuum passes fiber straight through the filter and exhausts it at head height; sweeping lifts settled dust back into the air. Both turn a contained problem into a distributed one.
So: stop the work, leave the debris where it is, shut the door on the room, turn off anything moving air through that space, and keep people out. That is the whole of the immediate response and it costs nothing.
Get it identified before you get it priced
A quote against an unidentified material is a guess, and a firm that tells you it is definitely asbestos without a test is one to be careful of. Testing is a fraction of the cost of removal and about a third of what we sample is negative — in which case everyone goes back to work.

Whose problem is it — yours or the contractor's?
If you are the homeowner, the discovery is yours to resolve but the method is theirs to respect: a contractor who keeps working through suspect material after it has been flagged is taking on the consequences of that. If you are the contractor, stopping and sampling is both the cheap option and the defensible one.
Either way the notification clock, if it turns out to be needed, starts from the day it was found rather than from whenever it got reported — which is to everybody's benefit.
Getting back on site
Negative result: work resumes immediately and you have the report for the file. Positive: the result becomes the abatement scope, the area is dealt with, and the rest of the renovation continues around it or after it depending on the layout.

Is finding asbestos mid-renovation an emergency?
Not usually. Intact material that has just been uncovered is not releasing fiber. It becomes urgent when it has been broken, scraped or swept.
